Marvel's next superhero epic "Thor" could not match Universal's "Fast Five" which is now the highest ever Wednesday opener ever in Australia. "Fast Five" opened stronger than "Spider-Man 3" and "Iron Man 2" which were big movies in Australia. Though not opening as strong as "Fast Five", "Thor" actually did gross 35% more than "Iron Man" earned in it's opening weekend.
"Thor" may not have done as well in Australia because most people there didn't know it was out. Some release schedules had it set to open April 28 (next week) so a lot of people in Australia were honestly not aware it was already out. Some of the smaller cinemas and drive-in theaters in Australia are not going to start showing "Thor" till next Thursday. Also, as many people have already noted, "Thor" is a new (and lesser known) superhero property while "Fast Five" is part of the very successful "The Fast and the Furious" franchise.
It's hard to say why, but "Thor" was a bit of a disappointment for Marvel and Paramount in Australia. It will be interesting to see how well "Thor" does here in the states. I am sure it will do better than it did in Australia, but how much better remains to be seen. It could be huge hit here or it could be a disappointment here as well. No matter how it does here, "Thor" is getting fairly good reviews so far from the critics. At least it has that going for it.
