Do I think a Spider-Man themed musical is a bad idea? No, in fact I would say it is a GREAT idea...if done right. The problem with "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" is that it was too big for broadway. There is only so much you can do in a live production. It's always wise to know your limits, "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" did not seem to know it's limits. I do believe that it could have been (and still can) a great play if more focus was spent on the story and less on the action. There is still a lot that can be done with live action, Spider-Man could still swing around on stage and it would still be visually stunning, but it might be too difficult to have Spider-Man battle the Green Goblin above the audience's head. That concept sounds good, but only if it works. The trouble is, it does not always work and sometimes it leaves cast members dangling on the ceiling for hours. I would rather see Spider-Man swing around a few times only on stage than have to look up and see Spider-Man just hanging on the ceiling for an hour because something went wrong.
Long story short, I don't know if Spider-Man was a wise thing to turn into a play, but I think it has promise. As a fan of U2, I want to see the play just to hear the music Bono and The Edge wrote for it. Plus...it does not hurt that I am a major nerd who loves comic books.
Well, I better head off. Take care everyone and thanks for reading. Till next blog!
