Though there have been many films that have opened larger than that at midnight showings, “Thor” isn’t off to a bad start since it’s not as well known as some of the other properties that have opened to larger numbers. The studios are predicting it will make around $60+ million during it’s opening weekend so it will be in the same league as another recent Marvel film, “The Incredible Hulk”. “Thor” doesn’t look like it will be a runaway hit like “Iron Man” was, but it certainly doesn’t look like a flop either. The film is also getting very good reviews and it performing very well internationally. Unless the film ends up making far less than predicted, I think a future sequel is a safe bet after “The Avengers”.
“Thor” should easily be #1 at the box office with “Fast Five” likely coming in second after it’s monstrous first weekend (“Fast Five” opened to over $80 million). “Thor” was directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins (just to name a few).
