James Arness (real name James King Aurness) has passed away today at the age of 88 as a result of natural causes. Arness was best known for playing Matt Dillon in the extremely popular show “Gunsmoke” from 1955-1975. Arness also reprised the role of Matt Dillon in “Alias Jesse James”, “Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge”, “Gunsmoke: The Last Apache”, “Gunsmoke: To the Last Man”, “Gunsmoke: The Long Ride” and “Gunsmoke: One Man’s Justice”. Arness was also well know for playing Jim McClain in “McClain’s Law” and Zeb Machan in “The Macahans” and “How the West Was Won” (TV mini-series). Arness also played the legendary Jim Bowie in “The Alamo: Thirteen Days to Glory”. Arness also starred in movies such as “The Thing from Another World”, “Hondo” and “Them!". In addition to his many starring roles, Arness also guest starred once in another popular show, “The Lone Ranger”. Arness was a very skilled performer and he will be greatly missed.
